Today I'm joining the lovely ladies for Tuesdays On The Run. Where we talk about a different topic each week that is running related.
Today's topic is "Post Race Rituals and Rewards"
I've got a few things that I do after a race, particularly a half marathon... they are aimed towards recover and re fueling.
After crossing a finish line, I grab a bottle of water so that I can get myself rehydrated, I drink about 4 oz. Shortly after that I head towards the bag pick-up and get my shaker bottle that I've filled with a scoop Vega Sport Recovery Accelerator and I pour the rest of the water in there and drink.
In the meantime, I'll change into my OOFOS for comfort and walk around the festivities at the finish area. I'll usually grab a banana. I try to stay on my feet as much as possible before heading to the car to head home.
Once home, I make it a point to foam roll really good. I also take a bath with Epsom salt, baking soda, and lavender oil.
Sometimes I'll take a nap, other times I will go straight to figuring out what I want to put in my belly. The reward part seems to be centered around food! Some of the time, I know exactly what it is that I want for my post-race meal.

Confession: I usually don't foam roll after a long run. But I did on Sunday and I wasn't sore AT ALL on Monday. Amazing and life-changing.
ReplyDeleteYou're so wise to bring recovery juice to the race with you and start that recovery process. Um, strawberry shortcake? Yes please!
ReplyDeleteI always love taking hot Epsom salt baths after a race in my jacuzzi tub. So relaxing!
ReplyDeleteOne of these days I'm gonna try epsom salts!
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a shake person, but i usually have some kind of bar with me to eat afterward. Often I'm not that hungry, but I'm pretty good about making sure I eat it. I'm good about foam rolling too (when I can have it with me), but usually I am ready to rest a while before I do much afterwards.
Oh... it was sooo good! Does anything beat mom's cooking?
ReplyDeleteIt is for sure!
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the rest part!
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how much it helps!
ReplyDeletemy rewards generally involve pizza :) and chocolate
ReplyDelete"other times I will go straight to figuring out what I want to put in my belly." Ha - that's always my first priority after a race, especially a long one ;)
ReplyDeleteI should foam roll after a race... I am getting in the habit of doing it daily, but tend to after races and that's when I would need it the most. I always treat myself to a massage after a race (if it's a half). I like the idea of changing shoes too! I have never thought of bringing another set of shoes, but that would be soooo comfortable.
Pizza sounds like an awesome reward (as does chocolate)!
