Sex … Drugs … Murder

glorious-heresiesThis book has a very complex story line that all begins when grandmother Maureen Phelan is surprised in her home by a stranger, she clubs the intruder with a Holy Stone and as a result he dies. This one act connects the range of characters and their stories in the book.

The book is set in modern day Ireland… the underbelly of Ireland.  You have Ryan is a fifteen-year-old drug dealer, his alcoholic father Tony, Georgie a sex worker, and Jimmy a gangster. McInerney fully develops each character, no matter how questionable… you end up caring about what happens to them.

While it was described as darkly funny, I didn’t really find it humorous.  It was captivating and hard to put down.  At times, I would put it down and just think to myself… “wow”.

I did take me awhile to get used to regional dialect, but once I did I was hooked.

Note:  I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through Blogging For Books for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
